India to Launch Its Own Space Station by 2035: ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan

New Delhi, March 26, 2025 – In a historic announcement, the Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Dr. V. Narayanan, confirmed that India will establish its own space station by 2035. The ambitious project, named the Bharatiya Antariksh Station, marks a significant leap in India's space exploration journey and strengthens the nation's position as a key player in global space research.

A Milestone in India’s Space Ambitions

The announcement aligns with India's long-term space goals, including the ambitious Gaganyaan mission, which aims to send Indian astronauts into space, and the broader objective of landing an Indian astronaut on the Moon by 2040. With this plan, India joins an elite league of nations with independent space station capabilities.

Features of Bharatiya Antariksh Station

• The space station is expected to weigh approximately 52 tons and will be placed in low Earth orbit (LEO) at around 400 km altitude.

• It will serve as a microgravity research hub, enabling advanced scientific experiments in various fields such as material science, medicine, and space technology.

• Designed to host astronauts for 3-6 months, it will support long-duration human space missions and serve as a launchpad for deep space explorations.

The Road Ahead

ISRO has laid out a roadmap to gradually develop and assemble the station through a series of missions over the next decade. The agency is also focusing on enhancing commercial satellite launches and forming international partnerships to boost India's role in the global space economy.

Dr. Narayanan, who took charge as ISRO Chairman on January 13, 2025, emphasized the significance of the project, stating, “This space station will be a monumental achievement for India, fostering innovation, research, and global collaboration.”
