Rekha Gupta Becomes Delhi’s First BJP Woman Chief Minister in 27 Years

Rekha Gupta has been appointed as the Chief Minister of Delhi, marking a significant milestone as the first woman from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to hold this position in 27 years. Her appointment follows the BJP's recent victory in the Delhi assembly elections, where the party secured 48 out of 70 seats, ousting the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Gupta, 50, began her political journey in 1992 with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at Delhi University. She served as the President of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) from 1996 to 1997. Over the years, she has held various positions within the BJP, including General Secretary and President of the Delhi University Students' Union, and has been a member of the party's national executive and the Delhi state unit.

Her political career also includes being a three-time councillor and former mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC). In the recent assembly elections, she won the Shalimar Bagh constituency by a margin of approximately 30,000 votes.

Gupta's appointment is notable, as it is uncommon for Indian political parties to name women to top positions. She becomes the fourth female Chief Minister of Delhi, with West Bengal's Mamata Banerjee being the only other woman currently serving as a Chief Minister in India.
