New Delhi: Former IAS officer Gyanesh Kumar has been appointed as the 26th Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India, succeeding Rajiv Kumar, whose tenure concludes on February 18, 2024.

The appointment was finalized by a high-level selection panel led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which also included Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi.

Who is Gyanesh Kumar?

A senior bureaucrat from the Kerala cadre, Gyanesh Kumar has held key administrative positions in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs.
